Another project that we’ve just photographed is this remarkable new home in the Surrey Hills – between Guildford and Dorking.
This was a major residential conversion and a challenging project. The site was a derelict stable yard, and we worked closely with the clients to design this beautiful new house, whilst still retaining the character and features of the original building. By providing creative vision for the project, along with visualisations and walk-through simulations of the new interiors we’d designed, we enabled them to make a success of this exciting project.
We created a sensitively-designed yet clearly-defined entrance and hallway for the property. The sheltered entrance welcomes visitors to the home and through to the internal courtyard, links the interior spaces together, and yet preserves the sense of the original access route into the stable yard.
Working closely with the client and architect we developed the internal layouts of the home. We were keen to maximise the open spaces that were possible from this conversion, yet at the same time it was crucial to ensure that individual areas retained a sense of personal scale and their own identities.
As well as refining the use of space and the flow through the property, we looked to work with the original fabric of the building in ways that that would enhance the interior design of the finished property.
On one side of the hallway is the sitting room, with an elegant furniture arrangement around a double-sided wood-burning stove. On either side of the new chimney great you can see the property continuing to a further reception space, and with connecting views into the courtyard. This ‘broken plan’ layout both connects and separates the individual spaces.
On the other side of the hallway is a magnificent kitchen and dining room. Occupying a whole side of the stable yard and flooded with light from both sides, it enjoys views of both the entrance to the house as well as the garden courtyard.
The kitchen is carefully planned around a large island, providing a functional space which encourages socialising and also allows comfortable circulation through to the bedrooms in the wing beyond. The bespoke kitchen combines rich colours and striking finishes, and is a stunning centrepiece to this wonderful home.
As with all of our interior design projects there’s as much depth as there is breadth, and the full design story will be in our interior design portfolio soon…
