Hello. We’re an architectural interior design studio working throughout the City of London.

We provide high-end interior design in the Square Mile, creating beautifully refined homes that feel calm, characterful and completely personal.

We’ve worked across the City of London and its surrounding neighbourhoods since 2007, from the Barbican and Clerkenwell to Farringdon, Moorgate and St Paul’s.

Our projects have ranged from Grade II-listed Barbican apartments to industrial conversions in Farringdon and modern apartments in Clerkenwell. Each project is shaped by the client we work with and the unique architectural setting of their home.

I believe the architectural design and interior decoration of our homes can have a profound influence on our lives and our wellbeing.

Modern city living in the Square Mile is dynamic, fast-paced and often compact — and home becomes essential for balance, wellbeing and clarity. A well-designed interior supports the many roles these homes must play: a retreat, a workspace, a place to entertain, and a quiet anchor amid the energy of the city.

This is achieved through thoughtful, intelligent, deeply personalised design that responds to how you live. Seeing clients experience the ease, comfort and sense of belonging that comes from a beautifully resolved home is at the heart of our practice.

Interior designer in the City of London – our studio

We specialise in private residential interiors and design-led developments across the City and the wider EC1–EC4 districts. Our work spans historic buildings and conversions, modernist buildings including flats in the Barbican Estate, and new-build developments across Clerkenwell and Farringdon.

We handle complex, managed properties requiring permissions and Licences to Alter. We offer a fully managed interior design service, from concept to installation, tailored thoughtfully to each client and property.

Designing for the City of London’s Architectural Variety

This part of central London has one of the richest architectural landscapes in the world. Brutalist icons sit beside Georgian remnants; Victorian warehouses have become contemporary apartments; modern towers rise among medieval streets.

Designing here requires sensitivity to scale, materiality and architectural language. Whether revitalising a Barbican apartment or reworking the interior of a Clerkenwell townhouse, we honour the building’s character while creating interiors that feel calm, functional and entirely suited to modern living.

The unique challenges of interiors in the City of London

The City of London is densely populated, with high property values and often compact living spaces. Our interior design work here often involves working intelligently with space, light and flow, and designing creatively with layout to support modern living. Converted and period buildings often have complex layouts, and we have great experience in unlocking the potential of these properties for our clients.

Many projects need close coordination with freeholders and building managers too. We handle this process fully, ensuring all necessary approvals and licences are obtained smoothly — and we have a 100% record in gaining permission for the interior design alterations we propose.

A sense of calm within the City’s urban rhythm

Across our City of London projects, a shared thread emerges: the desire for quiet luxury, clarity and ease. We design interiors that feel grounded and beautifully resolved, even in the most energetic surroundings — balancing contemporary design with warm materials, layered textures and refined simplicity. The result is a home that feels influenced by life in this wonderful city, yet deeply personal and beautifully attuned to modern living.

Testimonials from our clients across London

I commissioned Residence Interior Design to redesign our 2 bedroom property in London Bankside into a 4 bedroom house with the view not only to obtain planning permission but to fundamentally change the way the property functioned and flowed.

I am happy to say we gained planning permission and was thrilled with Stephen’s interior design ideas for our family home and can thoroughly recommend him to any future client.

His passion and enthusiasm for even the smallest detail was a delight to witness.

SU, Bankside, London

It has been an absolute pleasure dealing with you on this alteration which due to your good management has run very smoothly.

RS, Senior Property Manager, Rendall & Rittner London

Stephen combines a creative sense of design with a professional’s understanding of what is sensible. This combination results in very attractive and importantly very liveable space.

He is easy to work with and listens carefully to the full set of requirements — including budgetary.

I would immediately reach for Stephen again for any renovations or input to new build.

R&PI, Westminster, London

Stephen helped me with a full refurbishment of my flat and I absolutely cannot recommend him enough.

From start to finish Stephen was an absolute lifesaver:
– Keeping a large and complex project running smoothly (and on budget)
– Had meticulous attention to detail – everything was perfect
– Thinking outside the box and translating my often vague ideas into stunning reality
– Finding beautiful finishes and fittings that I couldn’t even have thought of
– Managing various contractors and suppliers

And he did it all with a smile and positive attitude even when things weren’t going according to plan – always found a solution!

Thank you Stephen!

AE, Knightsbridge / South Kensington, London

Stephen possesses originality and conviction but is also very willing to listen and explain his ideas.

His attention to detail and commitment to high quality are also obvious but (unusually) he wants rooms that are practical and work within a budget – he doesn’t pitch the unrealistic.

I’d recommend Stephen without hesitation.

JB, Kingston upon Thames, London

I cannot recommend Stephen highly enough. He combines a rare combination of expertise and experience and he was a true partner in the project to renovate and remodel my London townhouse.

He has a great eye and flair for imagining how the whole will come together harmoniously while being meticulous about every last detail. Stephen followed the project from inception to completion. At each stage he listened intently, took on board, interpreted and improved my ideas, adding his own and then presented a range of realistic options for how to proceed.

At each stage he made me aware of the costs and was conscious of the overall budget. It was a pleasure to work with Stephen. The results were splendid and I am delighted with my new home.

SF, Chelsea, London

I would have no reservation in recommending Stephen to friends.

He helped me to develop the design plans in a way that reflected the direction I wanted to go in while being practical and conscious about cost, lead times, and availability of materials. He coordinated suppliers and worked closely with contractors to make sure things were done on time and properly.

Stephen made all of the difference to turn what could have been unpleasant into into an experience that was both smooth and, dare I say it, enjoyable.

Interior design projects in the City of London & EC1–EC4 – a selection

london barbican dining kitchen pocket doors

Barbican Estate, London EC2

A modern interior redesign of a Grade II-listed Barbican Estate flat in the City of London. In this carefully considered design for one of London’s most iconic locations, we strived to preserve the spirit of the modernist interiors of the Barbican, while incorporating new joinery and contemporary finishes in a way that respected the character and intent of those original interiors. We gained Listed Building Consent for the reinstatement of original design details, as well as sympathetic alterations to support modern living. The interior design palette was driven by simplicity and continuity, with a consistency across the flat which strengthens the sense of place in this London landmark.

clerkenwell london interior design kitchen project

Clerkenwell, London EC1

In the complete interior redesign of this flat in London’s Clerkenwell, the layout was redesigned to make the space work much harder. Using a broken-plan design concept, we made more of the open areas, natural light and views over the Square Mile’s rooftops. The design concept for the interior reflected the style of the clients, and also suggested the history of the Clerkenwell area, and the heritage of those who have lived here. We managed all permissions on the clients’ behalf, liaising with the RTM management company and securing the Licence to Alter for the works.

London Farringdon joinery furniture design

Farringdon, London EC1

A sleek, contemporary redesign of an industrial conversion apartment in London’s Farringdon area. The interior was designed to accommodate as much of the clients’ collection of artwork and glassware as possible, with bespoke joinery and custom lighting. Textured wallcoverings and Douglas Fir timber flooring bring warmth to the entrance, and in the open plan space the kitchen is carefully configured so it doesn’t dominate the room. Flexibility was key to suiting the homeowner’s lifestyle, with adaptable furniture, and a lighting system that could be reconfigured as artworks were repositioned and rehung as desired.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a particular interior design style for the City of London?

No single style defines this part of London — its architectural range is too extraordinary.

Instead, we design homes that respond to their setting, whether Brutalist, industrial or contemporary, while remaining deeply personal to each client and their lifestyle.

Learn more about our interior design approach and philosophy.

Do we use suppliers from the City of London in our projects?

We do, and we work closely with an extensive network of London suppliers and makers. Clerkenwell and Farringdon in particular are home to a fantastic range of interiors suppliers and architectural showrooms, and we often source for our projects in this part of London.

It’s a design destination in its own right, with many London Design Festival events held around the City of London, including Clerkenwell Design Week.

Where in the City of London do you work?

Everywhere. The Square Mile, the Barbican Estate, Moorgate, Spitalfields, St Paul’s, Blackfriars and Aldgate.
