Our kitchen redesign near Winchester, Hampshire in our design portfolio
I teased a few photos of this Winchester kitchen redesign project a while ago. The full set of images from the interior is now in our design portfolio.
This project was a refurbishment of an existing open-plan kitchen and dining room in a period property in Hampshire. There was already a beautifully-made bespoke kitchen, but the scheme, style and colours needed to be brought up-to-date.
With careful selections we were able to transform the room while minimising works.
The starting point was the refinishing of the handmade kitchen cabinetry in a contemporary grey green colour from Little Greene’s English Heritage range. We replaced the old handles with sleek copper knobs sourced from Sweden, the colour of which also tones with the antique quarry tile floor. The kitchen was accessorised with copper light fittings and shades, as well as the latest copper-finished kettle and toaster from Dualit. The warmth of the metal ties in with the refinished teak worktop too.
We rebuilt the Aga oven with a new enamelled front in dark grey and installed a fresh splashback of Italian white brick tiles, complete with custom-painted electrical accessories from Wandsworth to match their surroundings. The wall cabinets are now painted white to increase the feeling space in the eye line of the room, and simple window treatments give a fresh and clean appearance to the space.
In the dining area the contemporary oak table has been combined with vintage Cassina ‘Cab’ chairs by Mario Bellini. The black leather of the chairs balances the black granite worktop of the kitchen island and the top of the Aga. A rebuilt shelving area provides space for cookery books, storage and display, and beneath this is a handy desk or study area.
The electrics were updated too and all of the downlights are now energy-efficient LEDs.
Overall the project was a transformation of this traditional kitchen – retaining much of the structure of the country kitchen, while using a palette of contemporary colours and finishes to update it. Modern fittings and furnishings complete a look which is sympathetic to the period country property, yet very much on-trend.
